We Are is a group of three young musicians who all grew up in the time where all music was accessible and unlimited, allowing them to bring countless various sources of inspiration into their music. CHROMB!’s music comes more from the heart than it does from the head. It is not limited by any restrictions and will not be confined to a particular style. In the words of its members, it is “chamber music for adults and wild children”. The band is greatly influenced by John Zorn, The Residents and Soft Machine, as well as Japanese noise-rock Melt Banana and French caricaturist Pierre la Police.

They feed a love for both tacky pop and dense noise, they take freedom from jazz, energy from rock, and madness from all kinds of devious music, to create an amalgam of melodies, shrieks and silence that radiates inner quirkiness.

Melez, a newly established musical group, started off boldly, performing for the first time at the prestigious Jazz Fest Berlin. Led by singer/songwriter Cansu Tanrikulu, the trio puts forward a realization of their vision of avantgarde, multifaceted improvisation music. Their music draws on improvised sessions which are coordinated and reformed further by Tanrıkulu and her compositional ideas. This process gives their compositions a fresh character and allows each group
member to fully utilise his/her instincts and creative devices. American drummer Jim Black is one of the most prominent figures of New York Downtown jazz and one of the most distinctive jazz drummers of today. Austrian pianist Elias Stemeseder has collaborated with Black since 2009 as part of Jim Black Trio.

Ondřej Pivec, a Czech-American organist, is one of world’s top musicians. In 2017 he won a Grammy with band led by singer Gregory Potter. He has also collaborated with Wu-Tang Clan, Billy Cobham, Joel Frahm, and others. As one of the few "white Europeans" who have succeeded on the gospel scene, he worked as musical director and producer at several Harlem churches and still performs at Sunday services in black churches. Formed in 2005, Organic Quartet combines different forms of traditional American jazz, blues, soul jazz, and funk with elements of modern jazz in brilliant solo parts and time-tested compact interactions.

Vilém Spilka Quartet introduce their new original album Čekání na Toma (Waiting for Tom), inspired largely by the band members’ children. Tom is the six-year-old son of saxophonist Rarek Zapadlo, living with autism spectrum disorder. “The opening song is about waiting for who he’ll become. If Tom will tell us anything. If he’ll want to be part of our world. Autism has become my source of inspiration, and because its causes still remain a mystery, the following songs on the album also create a sense of mystery”, says the band member.

The Waiting for Tom album was awarded Best album prize of 2019 in the vote “Česká jazzová sklizeň” held by Czech Radio Jazz. Besides its powerful non-musical message, expert voters recognised the overall musical quality and innovative composition ideas by guitarist Vilém Spilka from Brno.

Saxophonist Radek Zapadlo studied at Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory and Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno. He is considered one of the best Czech saxophonists of the past twenty years. The Shape of Jazz to Come (named after Ornett Coleman’s famous album, considered the first of free jazz albums) is a new project that we would like to keep alive in the coming years. Five talented, original female artists of the young generation have been selected to become JGTT residents for three days – they will rehearse their own compositions and perform them as part of Thursday’s concert.

The Talaqpo quartet balances between world music, jazz, and contemporary music. Their last album Totribes alluded to folk and classic music of Indian states Orissa and Tamilnad. Their music is inspired by their travels through west Africa and by encounters with local communities. In the quartet’s approach, however, ethnic music is not something to be imitated. Instead, they draw inspiration from the processes in which local music is created, with the environment as starting point, rather than employing existing rhythms and melodies typical of specific regions. The band’s music is enriched with free improvisation and unique individual contributions of its members, whose diverse backgrounds bring a balanced synergy to the quartet.

This marriage of accordion, trombone, and double bass was not born from a desperate need to create something novel and shocking. Instead, it is the natural result of cooperation between three people sharing both musical and personal connection who get inspiration from their collaboration. The trio’s all-original repertoire is varied, encompassing influences of jazz, folk and classical music as well as contemporary compositional techniques.

“The three of us all perform in projects spanning a wide range of genres, so we try to bring into our band anything that we find exciting in contemporary music, exploring the possibilities of sound allowed by our instrumental combination.”

Composer and guitarist Tomáš Mika created the four-member musical body TokDat. His jazz quartet brings raw-sounding uncompromising compositions balancing between minimalism and maximalism. Although their genre is difficult to define, they inevitably emulate musical genres of the author’s other ensembles, namely contemporary classical music, folk, jazz or pop and rock music. The band’s specialty are its elaborate rhythms and links between instrumental parts which, despite their individual austerity, combine into a coherent, intricate unit.

The Killing Popes’ music is set somewhere between complex rhythms, masterful chaos, and stunning melodies.

Oliver Steidle, winner of New German Jazz Award 2008 and 2010, is known for his collaborations with Der Rote Bereich, Peter Brötzmann, who performed at JGTT 2016, and Philm. Having also extensive international experience, he is among the main figures of the ever-evolving young Berlin avantgarde.

The Killing Popes is as much a punk band as it is a jazz one. Silly, loud, peculiar, and yet brilliant in technique and exact to the millisecond. Their sounds and their rustles are in magical harmony and it is this tension that feeds their energy. With a cultivated chaos. With bursts of the sharpest form. With melodies thrown into the room only to be shot down like clay pigeons.

Pimpono Ensemble is a group based in Copenhagen, of musicians from Poland, Denmark, and Norway. The band’s music combines punk and rock energy, free improvisation, experimental curiosity, beautiful nostalgic melodies, and noise, all in the form of a jazz orchestra. Their energetic music, complete with unexpected short texts exclaimed collectively, is full of youthful idealism, dreams, and non-conformity.

Their music offers a blend between the intensity and intelligence of modern jazz and the street life of Harlem. Hammond organ player and Grammy nominee Brian Charette has abundant experience of collaborating with stars such as Joni Mitchell, Lou Donaldson, Chaka Khan, Cindy Lauper or Michael Bublé. He has recorded successful albums with the famous Steeple Chase company. He also worked for Tonight Show Band and spent over twenty years playing with Laczo Déczi. Jazz Times’ Bill Milkowski has described Brian as one of the best B3 Hammond organ players of the new generation.

Heart of Dixie is a group of untamed musicians that was formed at the Department of Jazz Interpretation at JAMU. What started as a modest dixieland later grew into a fierce octet dominating stages across Europe. The group focuses on dance swing and brings life into lindy-hop festivals from Turkey to Spain with their characteristic sound of big band.

This is a rare combination of the technical precision of first-generation Czech university-graduated jazzmen and the effervescence of the young generation who adore the timeless swing. Come and let yourself be swooned by music that is complex yet accessible, entertaining without appearing obvious. Enjoy listening to what belonged to mainstream pop music eighty years ago but was also an artistic experiment and jazz of the highest quality.
