30 Years of Hope and Understanding

This year, the music festival Jazz Goes to Town will celebrate its 30th anniversary and we are honored to carry on this fine and deep-rooted tradition. In 1995, the festival included the performance of the famous American band, Art Ensemble of Chicago – a groundbreaking event in Czech culture. The performance was, however, so controversial that a substantial amount of the audience left before its ending. Now, we are convinced that it was the organisers’ audacity and will to host such events that gradually led to the growth of the Czech audience and culture, and now, a performance like this would receive a much warmer welcome. We chose this year’s theme – “30 Years of Hope and Understanding” – because we think that music presented at the festival encourages understanding and appreciation of unorthodox and complex artistic expression, and this appreciation is so rewarding that it leads to a deeper mutual understanding beyond the context of music.
